The History of Presidents in Cyprus: English and Greek
Cyprus, a Mediterranean island nation, has a rich political history. The country has been under various rulers throughout the centuries, including the Ottoman Empire and the British Empire. However, Cyprus gained independence in 1960 and has since been governed by a series of presidents. In this article, we will explore the history of the presidents in Cyprus in both English and Greek.
English:
The first president of Cyprus was Archbishop Makarios III, who served from 1960 to 1974. Makarios was a key figure in the country's struggle for independence from British rule. During his presidency, he worked to promote a policy of non-alignment and pursued closer ties with other non-aligned countries.
Following Makarios' removal from power in a coup in 1974, Cyprus was divided into two zones, with the northern part of the island occupied by Turkey. The internationally recognized government of Cyprus continued to function in the southern part of the island under the leadership of Glafcos Clerides, who served as president from 1993 to 2003.
Since the early 2000s, Cyprus has been led by a series of presidents from different political parties. These include Tassos Papadopoulos (2003-2008), Demetris Christofias (2008-2013), Nicos Anastasiades (2013-2023), and currently, the incumbent president, Ioannis Kasoulides.

Πρώτος πρόεδρος της Κύπρου ήταν ο Αρχιεπίσκοπος Μακάριος Γ', ο οποίος υπηρέτησε από το 1960 έως το 1974. Ο Μακάριος υπήρξε βασικό πρόσωπο στον αγώνα της χώρας για ανεξαρτησία από τη βρετανική κυριαρχία. Κατά τη διάρκεια της προεδρίας του, εργάστηκε για την προώθηση μιας πολιτικής αδέσμευσης και επιδίωξε στενότερους δεσμούς με άλλες αδέσμευτες χώρες.
Μετά την απομάκρυνση του Μακαρίου από την εξουσία με πραξικόπημα το 1974, η Κύπρος χωρίστηκε σε δύο ζώνες, με το βόρειο τμήμα του νησιού να κατέχεται από την Τουρκία. Η διεθνώς αναγνωρισμένη κυβέρνηση της Κύπρου συνέχισε να λειτουργεί στο νότιο τμήμα του νησιού υπό την ηγεσία του Γλαύκου Κληρίδη, ο οποίος διετέλεσε πρόεδρος από το 1993 έως το 2003.
Από τις αρχές της δεκαετίας του 2000, η Κύπρος διοικείται από μια σειρά προέδρων από διαφορετικά πολιτικά κόμματα. Μεταξύ αυτών είναι οι Τάσος Παπαδόπουλος (2003-2008), Δημήτρης Χριστόφιας (2008-2013), Νίκος Αναστασιάδης (2013-2023) και σήμερα, ο νυν πρόεδρος, Ιωάννης Κασουλίδης.
